Porotech, a world leader in microLED and gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology, has announced the world’s first single-panel, full-color microcontroller suitable for augmented reality (AR) applications. The microdisplay is based on Porotech’s breakthrough Dynamic Pixel Tuning® (DPT®) technology, where DPT microLED pixels can emit any visible color when driven at specific current densities. Porotech will unveil a 0.26-inch monolithic full-color microdisplay and AR development platform during SID Display Week, May 21-26, 2023 in Los Angeles.
The new technology marks another milestone in the industry as it provides a solution to the manufacturing barriers that have prevented full-color native microLED displays from being produced. Full-color native microLED displays are made possible through epitaxial growth of a single LED and one-step wafer-to-wafer bonding to a CMOS backplane. This new process removes the complex, low-yield manufacturing barriers inherent in alternative approaches.
The monolithic full-color MicroLED display is a matrix 0.26″ microLED display with 1280×720 resolution utilizing a proprietary driving method developed by Porotech to emit red, green, and blue light rapidly, creating a full color RGB display and vividly saturated colors.
Porotech Founder and CEO Tongtong Zhu is excited to have developed a game-changing technology that will serve the entire microLED industry and AR glasses. The company’s technology is not just for AR/VR but extends to smartwatches, smartphones, tablets, flat panel TVs, and large panel displays for commercial outdoor billboards. With the new advances, AR developers can incorporate the high pixel density and minimal form factor of Porotech’s single-panel full-color solution into their AR glasses.
Porotech is focused on next-generation display applications and has a revolutionary PoroGaN® technology platform that enables ultra-compact and efficient micro-LED chips capable of emitting all colors in the visible spectrum with a single GaN material system. Porotech has offices in Cambridge (UK), Hsinchu (Taiwan), and Chandler, Arizona (USA).
