June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month and it is important to raise awareness about the mental health challenges faced by men. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, nearly one in 10 men experience depression or anxiety, but less than half seek help. Mental Health America reports that more men die by suicide in the United States than women, with New Hanover County reporting a suicide rate nearly double the national average last year, with 83% of reported suicides being men.

Wilmington Mental Health Therapist Gage Howard explains that there are various factors that often prevent men from seeking treatment, such as feeling the need to hide their emotions and feeling inferior when they do open up. Despite these challenges, therapists like Adam Howell are working towards breaking the stigma surrounding men’s health and encouraging individuals to seek help when needed.

Therapist Gage Howard emphasizes that asking for help is a brave step and it is important to remember that support is always available. Wilmington Mental Health emphasizes the importance of breaking down the stigma associated with counseling and therapy, especially for men, who are sometimes reluctant to seek help due to societal expectations. If you are struggling, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 for support.
