This new model, an upgrade from the Light Phone 2 released in 2018, offers more features akin to a smartphone. The Light Phone 2 could make calls and send texts while also providing navigation, music, podcasts, and a calendar, but did not have a web browser. The Light Phone 3 now includes additional functions such as the ability to use fingerprint ID, front and rear cameras, and the potential to support a digital wallet.
The company’s goal was to make it easier to transition to a simpler device, as stated in their release. However, these new features come at a higher price point. The Light Phone 3 retails for $799, $500 more than its predecessor, on par with the cost of an iPhone 14 Plus. One exciting addition to the Light Phone 3 is the presence of a camera, both front and rear, complete with a shutter button on the side. Light designed the rear camera after a classic point-and-shoot camera, offering users a genuinely fun way to take pictures. With a front-facing camera, the Light Phone 3 also allows video calls.
