The Iraqi Ministry of Transport has confirmed that the International Finance Corporation (IFC) presented a study regarding Baghdad International Airport with three options. The options included rehabilitating the current airport, building a new airport, or merging the two options. The government is leaning towards the third option.
The Ministry mentioned that the airport project is expected to be referred to investment by the end of the year. The IFC will assist in selecting the best international companies to carry out the project. The General Company for Airports and Air Navigation Management is also involved in the process of rehabilitating the airport’s infrastructure.
The rehabilitation of the airport aims to accommodate the increasing number of passengers, which has recently seen a 15.7% increase, reaching 3.4 million passengers in 2024. The goal is to increase this number significantly by 2036 in order to lift the European ban on Iraqi flights.
Plans include building a new passenger lounge to handle the expected increase in air traffic until 2036, aiming to increase the capacity of Baghdad International Airport to 8.5 to 9 million passengers annually.
