On Monday evening, chaos ensued when three parking garages along the Rhine were unexpectedly closed, causing a traffic jam. This closure was a result of the St. John’s Night Festival in Mainz, which concludes with a fireworks display. To ensure the safety of pedestrians, the city decided to shut down the parking garages between Fischtorplatz and Kaisertor from 9:30 p.m. on Monday until 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
Those who had parked their vehicles before the closure found themselves trapped inside as their exit was blocked by flatbed trucks. Despite the closure being communicated through small A4 printouts, many festival attendees were left frustrated and stranded in the garages. Eventually, city officials allowed drivers to leave before the official closure time.
However, as they started their journey home, they ran into another obstacle – a motorcade of Italian Football fans causing yet another delay. In the end, staying calm and patient was the only option for those caught in the unexpected chaos that unfolded that night along the Rhine in Mainz.
