Over the weekend, the main Syrian city of Damascus was the target of Israeli airstrikes. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), at least three people were killed and many others were wounded in the attack on a neighborhood with mansions belonging to members of the army and high-ranking officials.
The Sana news agency reported that the Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression targeting several targets in the vicinity of Damascus. The agency stated that air defense systems intercepted some rockets, while others caused material damage. SOHR also reported that the Mazza military airport, west of Damascus, was the target of an attack on Friday, but did not specify who was behind the missile attack.
The area is known to host militant groups, including the Lebanese Shia pro-Iranian Hezbollah and other pro-Iranian armed groups. These groups have been the frequent target of Israeli attacks since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
The Israeli military has stepped up attacks on armed groups backed by Iran, a key sponsor of Lebanon’s Hezbollah, since the start of the war with Hamas last October. Israel has repeatedly stated that it will not allow the strengthening of Iran’s presence in Syria.
