Three tips for easing stomach discomfort from overeating

According to Doctor Vu Truong Khanh, the Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, overeating can burden the stomach and affect intestinal motility. This can lead to slow gastric emptying, excessive stomach acid secretion, pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter, and reflux. Undigested food can decompose and ferment in the stomach, causing bloating, flatulence, and discomfort such as tightness, heaviness, belching, and nausea.

One way to soothe the stomach after overeating is by engaging in light exercises like walking. This promotes digestion and prevents acid reflux. It is advisable to avoid lying down immediately after a meal, as this can irritate the esophagus lining. Gentle exercise helps food move through the digestive system more efficiently and can reduce symptoms of bloating and discomfort.

In addition to light exercise, massage movements can also help reduce bloating and indigestion. Massaging the abdomen from left to right and working upwards towards the ribcage can promote digestion and relieve discomfort.

Supporting digestion with certain foods can also be beneficial. Green tea and herbal teas like ginger tea can stimulate saliva, bile, and gastric juice production, aiding digestion. Yogurt with beneficial bacteria can balance intestinal flora, regulate bowel movements, and improve digestion. Drinking warm lemon water can also stimulate hydrochloric acid production for better digestion.

Reducing stress is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system. Stress and emotional factors can lead to overeating and contribute to digestive issues. Relaxing, eating mindfully, and avoiding stress can help prevent discomfort and bloating after meals. Practices like eating slowly, chewing thoroughly, and focusing on meals can promote better digestion and reduce the risk of gastrointestinal issues.
