At the trade deadline, Oklahoma City made a surprising move in acquiring Gordon Hayward instead of a big man, raising questions about their ability to match up against bigger and more physical teams in the Western Conference. With key players like Nikola Jokic, Rudy Gobert, and Karl-Anthony Towns on the opposing teams’ rosters, it seemed like a logical decision for OKC to bulk up in the paint, especially with the presence of rookie Chet Holmgren, who can get pushed around a bit on the court.

To address this concern, the Thunder have decided to sign free-agent center Bismack Biyombo, as reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic. Although Biyombo may not bring much offense, his strengths lie in defense, rim protection, rebounding, and providing a physical presence in the paint. After playing 30 games for the Grizzlies this season, and starting 27 due to injuries on the team, he was waived a month ago. With the Thunder, he is expected to play important regular season and playoff minutes.

Biyombo has signed a guaranteed contract through the end of the season, in a veteran minimum deal, which indicates that the Thunder see him as a valuable addition to their roster for the potential deep playoff run.
