The capital of Japan is set to launch its own matchmaking app in the near future, as part of a government initiative to address the low birth rate in the country. Users of the app will need to provide proof of their single status, sign a document confirming their intention to marry, and show a tax receipt to indicate their annual salary.
Officials from Tokyo overseeing the app’s development noted that many individuals who want to get married do not actively participate in events or use existing apps to find a partner. The new app aims to encourage these individuals to take steps towards finding a partner by providing a platform for them to connect.
The app will also involve an interview process to confirm the identity of users, and it has been in testing since the end of last year. This initiative comes amid a continuous decline in Japan’s birth rate, with 2023 seeing a 5.1% decrease in births for the eighth consecutive year.
The Japanese government is aiming to address the labor shortage and boost the birth rate through various measures, including financial support for families and improved access to childcare services. The development of a municipal matchmaking app marks a unique approach to encouraging relationships and potentially increasing the number of marriages and births in Japan.
