Tom McCarthy of NBC Sports Philadelphia to Sit Out Remaining Phillies-Marlins Games

The Philadelphia Phillies will be missing their familiar television voice, Tom McCarthy, during their series against the Miami Marlins this weekend. McCarthy, who has been the team’s television voice for 14 seasons, will be broadcasting the NFL Week 1 matchup between the Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos on Sunday. He explained that he tries to limit his absences during the baseball season but CBS allows him to cover the NFL games. Scott Franzke, the longtime Phillies radio announcer, will be replacing McCarthy in the booth alongside analyst Rubén Amaro Jr. On the radio side, Gregg Murphy and Kevin Stocker will handle the play-by-play duties. McCarthy is also scheduled to miss two more games during the Phillies’ series against the St. Louis Cardinals and the game against the New York Mets due to other broadcasting commitments. Despite the busy schedule, McCarthy feels that the grind helps him stay sharp and focused.

McCarthy has been calling NFL games for 10 seasons and is paired with Hall of Famer James Lofton and former NFL kicker Jay Feely this year. He has previous experience working with both. McCarthy also holds the distinction of being the only play-by-play announcer, other than Jim Nantz, to call a game with Tony Romo. McCarthy has praised Romo’s knowledge and recall of the game. Nantz and Romo will be in the booth on Sunday to call the Eagles’ season opener against the New England Patriots. While McCarthy has never worked an Eagles game on TV for CBS, he called the Eagles’ playoff game on radio in 2021.

The Phillies have two upcoming games scheduled to be streamed on Apple TV+. The broadcast team for these games has not yet been announced. Fans have the option to listen to the games on 94.1 WIP or listen to the audio on WIP while streaming on Apple TV+. Those with DirecTV can also watch the games at bars and restaurants that already use the satellite service.
