Toy-Inspired “Devilish” Lamp Design

The ceiling lamp collection from Studio Rowa, a Japanese company, was inspired by a juggling device called the Devil, which rotates, whirls, throws into the air and catches again thanks to a rope attached to the tips of two sticks. This ancient juggling device from the Far East served as the inspiration for the lamp collection, designed by light designers Hiroki Hakamada. The flying part of the Devil consists of two concave elements connected to each other. Just as with this impressive oriental toy, Studio Rowa’s Diabolo Lamp consists of two “shells” combined in an hourglass shape and supported by a belt.

The only difference is the materials. While the juggling device is often made of rubber and plastic, the diabolo lamp is made of brass for the diffuser and artificial leather for the belt. Each element of this lamp collection is carefully and exclusively made and assembled by hand.
