Training on LUCI wheelchair technology hosted by MSU’s T.K. Martin Center on April 26

The T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability at Mississippi State University is offering a hands-on training session to explore the emerging technology of sensors for power wheelchairs. The event, titled “A Day with LUCI,” will take place on April 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Professionals in the field of assistive technology, including occupational and physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, teachers, and counselors are invited to attend.

The session will introduce participants to LUCI, an innovative power wheelchair system that uses smart sensors to prevent injury and damage during wheelchair use. Registrations cost $150 per person and includes a CEU credit, classroom instruction, an end-user panel discussion, hands-on training, and lunch. Registration is available at https://buff.ly/3eXQ3Bx.

During the hands-on training, participants will learn about the programming, options, and features of the LUCI system. They will also have the opportunity to practice using LUCI on different types of wheelchairs. The smart sensors in the system alert users when they are too close to an obstacle and stop the chair’s movement, enhancing safety and accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

Rebecca Mathis, an assistive technology specialist at the T.K. Martin Center, emphasized the value of the hands-on experience in helping participants understand the technologies and their limitations. Learn more about the LUCI system at https://luci.com. The T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability offers comprehensive evaluations and services to ensure individuals with disabilities benefit from advances in assistive technology.
