As president, Maak will work closely with the NBA league, the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), and NBAPA medical professionals to improve player performance and prioritize athletes’ health and well-being. He will lead efforts to prevent injuries, develop treatment plans, and ensure NBA players receive top-notch medical care. Maak will also continue to care for the Utah Jazz as their orthopedic physician, a role he has held since U of U Health became their official health care partner in 2014.
Maak is among the NBAPA’s longest-serving physicians, having held various positions such as chairman of the research committee and serving on the executive committee. His commitment to advancing health care in professional basketball is unparalleled, as he takes on his new role as NBAPA President. Maak is grateful for the trust and respect of his peers, who have chosen him to lead and represent them.
Maak’s educational background includes graduating from Stanford University and Yale School of Medicine, where he completed his medical training. He did his orthopedic surgery residency and sports medicine fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, where he also served as an assistant team physician for the New York Giants. After joining U of U Health in 2012, Maak has taken on various leadership roles within the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship and Sports, Spine, and Musculoskeletal Program. Additionally, he serves as the executive chairman of the Sports Medicine Oversight Committee at the University of Utah and is a team physician for University of Utah Athletics.
