Tropical Storm Chris Hits Veracruz Coastline in Mexico

Tropical Storm ‘Chris’ made landfall in the town of Lechuguillas in the southern Mexican state of Veracruz on Sunday night, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of Mexico. The storm hit the municipality of Vega de Alatorre at 10:50 p.m. with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h and gusts of 85 km/h, moving west at 20 km/h. The SMN warned of extraordinary rains in several states, with potential for landslides, increased river levels, and floods.

The Mexican authorities urged the population, tourists, and maritime navigation to heed official warnings and take precautions against rain, wind, and high waves. The SMN, in coordination with the National Hurricane Center in Miami, established a prevention zone for the effects of the tropical storm from Red Cape to the Port of Veracruz. ‘Chris’ is the third tropical cyclone of the 2024 season and coincides with other weather systems causing damage in Mexico.

The storm brings heavy rains and strong winds, posing risks of landslides and floods in several states. The organization warned of possible hail and urged residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
