TSMC Announces Production of ‘A16’ Chipmaking Technology to Begin in Late 2026

During a conference in Santa Clara, California, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co announced that a new chip manufacturing technology called “A16” will be entering production in the second half of 2026. TSMC’s co-Chief Operating Officer Y.J. Mii highlighted that this technology will enable the delivery of power to computing chips from the backside of the chip, which will enhance the performance of artificial intelligence chips. This development is significant as it will further solidify TSMC’s position in the competitive landscape against U.S. rival Intel.

TSMC is currently the largest contract manufacturer of chips for companies like Nvidia, known for producing the world’s fastest chips. Despite this, Intel has plans to surpass TSMC in producing faster chips with Intel’s “14A” technology in 2026. The competition between the two companies will likely intensify as they strive to push the boundaries of chip performance and innovation in the coming years. The advancements made by TSMC and Intel in chip manufacturing technology will have far-reaching implications for the future of computing and artificial intelligence.
