A magnitude 7.2 earthquake was recently reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGC) off the southern coast of Peru, occurring at a depth of 28 kilometers. Following this event, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PWTC) issued a warning regarding a potential tsunami with waves that could reach between one to three meters along certain coastlines of Peru. The center emphasized the possibility of dangerous tsunami waves occurring on specific coastlines based on available data, while also stating that there was no tsunami risk for the West Coast of the United States.
The earthquake itself took place eight kilometers west of Atiquipa, situated approximately 600 kilometers south of Lima, the capital of Peru. In response to the situation, the Peruvian presidency announced that the government is actively monitoring the event and evaluating any potential damage that may have been caused by the earthquake.
