The Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) of El Salvador has announced the closure of two political parties, Nosso Tempo and Democratic Change, due to lack of popular support. The electoral body explained that the two parties were unable to meet the required number of votes according to the national Law on Political Parties in the last presidential and legislative elections. This lack of votes was the reason for their closure.
According to the law, a political party is annulled when it does not obtain 50,000 valid votes in its favor and fails to secure at least one seat in the Assembly. In the recent legislative elections, Nosso Tempo received 41,060 votes and Democratic Change received 12,165 votes, which were far below the required threshold. As a result, neither party won any seats in the new legislature which recently took office.
The dominating party in the new legislature, led by re-elected president Nayib Bukele, is Novas Ideias. This party, to which Bukele belongs, received 2.2 million votes and secured 54 of the 60 seats in the Assembly along with its political allies. Other parties such as the Nationalist Republican Alliance (Arena) and VAMOS also won seats, while the left-wing Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) did not secure any seats.
Following the decision by the Supreme Electoral Court, the president of Nosso Tempo, Andy Failer, expressed his disappointment on social media, referring to the closure of the party as an “unfortunate resolution.” Despite the setback, the political landscape in El Salvador continues to evolve with new parties and alliances shaping the future of the country.
