TxDOT to close section of U.S. Highway 75 for “Technology Lanes”

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is embarking on a three-year project to convert the existing HOV lanes on U.S. Highway 75 (Central Expressway) into “Technology Lanes.” The northbound lanes will undergo construction until the fall of 2025, with the goal of reducing congestion during peak travel times.

Pylons between the HOV lane and main lanes have already been removed in preparation for the technology lane conversion. These new lanes will cater to HOVs, low-emission vehicles, and motorcycles during rush hours, while single-occupant vehicles will be allowed during non-peak times. The project is part of a $57 million initiative that includes restriping lanes, reconstructing barriers, installing dynamic message signs, overhead signs, and high-mast lighting.

Peak hours for the technology lanes are defined as 7 to 9 a.m. southbound and 4 to 6 p.m. northbound. The project will be completed in portions, known as “Rolls,” starting from I-635 to Highway 121. The exact timeline for each roll is not yet available, but closures will be updated on drivetexas.org for motorists to plan their routes accordingly. The completion date for the project is set for late 2026.
