UConn recently announced the signing of women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma to a five-year contract extension worth $18.7 million. This deal extends Auriemma’s contract through April 2029, when he will be 75 years old. It is expected that he will finish his career with UConn, where he has been the head coach since 1985.
Auriemma’s presence at UConn is crucial as the program navigates through a period of unprecedented growth in women’s basketball, amidst significant changes in college sports. Athletic director David Benedict described Auriemma as one of the greatest collegiate coaches of all time, highlighting his dedication to the university and state.
With a record of 1,213-162, 23 Final Fours, and 11 national championships, Auriemma has solidified his place in the history of the sport. Despite a recent championship drought, UConn remains a top program, with appearances in three of the last four Final Fours, including this year. The team is poised to compete for another championship next season, led by star player Paige Bueckers.
Looking ahead, Auriemma expressed excitement for the future, stating that there is much more to accomplish with his team and staff. He remains committed to the program and is eager for the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead. Auriemma’s accolades include nine-time AP National Coach of the Year and induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
