UConn Health is committed to providing equitable and inclusive healthcare to all members of the community, including those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning+. Recently, students from Reach Out, a student organization at UConn Health dedicated to LGBTQIA+ awareness, education, and activism in the medical and dental communities, raised the Pride flag. The students involved in raising the flag were fourth-year medical students Cailyn Regan, Sarah Hartmann, and Ryan Hannon.

Reach Out aims to bring students of all gender and sexual identities together, serve the greater Hartford community, and educate the next generation of clinicians on providing excellent patient care. The flag raising event was supported by UConn Health leadership, including CEO Dr. Andy Agwunobi, Chief Diversity Officer Dr. Jeffrey Hines, and faculty advisor Zita Lazzarini, JD, MPH. Also present were Internal Medicine Resident Dr. Nicholas Harriel and Ian Shick from the Rainbow Center at UConn.

Special thanks were extended to UConn Fire Department’s Captain Anthony Ruggiero and Deputy Chief Christopher Renshaw, along with UConn Police Officer Nolan Hurst, for their assistance in the flag-raising event. In addition, this month UConn Health’s campus has been illuminated in rainbow colors to show support for the LGBTQIA+ community.
