Roy Williams, a Tar Heel-for-life, is synonymous with Chapel Hill. This fact was reaffirmed in Omaha, Nebraska, as he was spotted in the stands during the first game of the College World Series. The matchup between No. 4 national seed North Carolina and No. 12 Virginia was an ACC showdown that the UNC basketball legend simply couldn’t miss. Sporting a North Carolina polo, Williams watched as the Tar Heels made their first College World Series appearance since 2018.

During March Madness, Williams further solidified his status as a Chapel Hill lifer when he traveled to Tucson, Arizona to watch NC State lose in the Final Four. A viral clip captured his disappointment after a Wolfpack basket, highlighting his loyalty to the Tar Heels. It’s no surprise he made the trip to Omaha to support a team he genuinely loves.

Williams was the head coach of North Carolina for 19 years, from 2003 to 2021. During his tenure, he led the Tar Heels to three championships and six Final Four appearances, losing just once in the championship game. With a coaching record of 485-163 (212-94 in the ACC) at North Carolina, Williams’s success on the court was undeniable. His overall coaching record of 903-264, including a noteworthy 79-27 in the NCAA Tournament, cemented his legacy as one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history. Prior to coaching at North Carolina, Williams spent 15 seasons at Kansas, another college basketball powerhouse.
