On this episode of Managed Care Cast, we’re joined by J. Nwando Olayiwola, MD, MPH; Candy Magaña, MPA; and Bereket Kindo, PhD, to discuss their study published in The American Journal of Managed Care®. Their study, titled “Screening for Health Literacy, Social Determinants, and Discrimination in Health Plans,” sheds light on the experiences of patients in a national health plan and the interaction between structural determinants of health, social determinants of health, and patient demographics.

Dr. Olayiwola is the chief health equity officer and senior vice president at Humana, where Magaña serves as the director of health equity innovation and Kindo as a lead data scientist. Together, they provide valuable insights into the relationship between health literacy, social determinants, discrimination, and patient experiences within a health plan.

Their research not only addresses the structural and social determinants of health but also delves into the impact of patient demographics on healthcare experiences. This study is a significant contribution to the understanding of healthcare disparities and the importance of addressing these factors to improve patient outcomes.
