Join us for Science Saturday on March 30, 2024, featuring a presentation by Michael Folmer, the warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Ocean Prediction Center in College Park, Md. The session will be held at 11 a.m. on Zoom and is organized by the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences. All Science Saturday sessions are free to attend.

Folmer will be discussing his work on “Forecasting the Weather From the Open Ocean to the Jersey Shore,” where he provides forecast products and Impact-Based Decision Support Services to various entities, including the U.S. Coast Guard, cruise lines, the cargo industry, and everyday mariners who venture beyond 60 nautical miles offshore. The presentation will also touch on the Jersey Shore Mesonet, a network of automated weather stations that includes the LBIF weather station. Folmer and his colleagues plan to expand this network further.

Although Folmer has a background in tropical meteorology, his main focuses now include satellite and mid-latitude weather. Prior to his current role at OPC, he served as the satellite liaison for several satellite programs, gaining expertise in the field. Registration for Science Saturday lectures can be done online at lbifoundation.org/science or through emails sent by LBIF to subscribers.
