The US ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, congratulated the Indian cricket team on their “incredible” victory in the T20 World Cup, where they lifted the title for the second time in 17 years. Garcetti expressed his excitement on Twitter, praising #TeamIndia and #MenInBlue for their outstanding achievement.
The final match, held at Kensington Oval in Barbados’s Bridgetown, saw the Indian team facing off against South Africa in a thrilling contest that went down to the wire. Winning the toss and choosing to bat, India posted a competitive total of 176/7, with standout performances from Virat Kohli, Axar Patel, and Shivam Dube.
In response, South Africa had a solid start but faced pressure from the Indian spinners as they chased down the target of 177 runs. Despite a strong performance from Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs, the South African team fell short, with Indian bowlers led by Jasprit Bumrah making crucial breakthroughs in the final overs.
India’s victory marked their second T20 World Cup win, with their previous triumph coming in the inaugural edition in 2007. This win also ended an 11-year drought for Team India in major ICC tournaments, with their last title coming in the Champions Trophy in 2013.
Meanwhile, the USA cricket team also had a notable presence in the T20 World Cup, achieving historic victories over Canada and Pakistan while putting up a strong fight against India in the group stages. Despite a promising start, the USA team couldn’t maintain their momentum in the Super 8s, facing defeats against South Africa, West Indies, and England.
However, the USA team’s performance secured their qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup, making it a significant milestone for cricket in the United States.
