Using AI to Assist ALS Patients Unable to Speak

Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of our daily lives, and now it is proving to be beneficial for ALS patients as well. In Israel, about 138 new cases of ALS were diagnosed in 2023, bringing the total number of patients in the country to about 600. Unfortunately, ALS is still an incurable disease, with patients typically living only a few months to several years after diagnosis.

In light of this, IsraAlS, an association dedicated to supporting ALS patients and their families, offers a listening ear and a helping hand to those affected by the disease. Recently, they held their 19th annual fundraising evening, which featured three prominent Israeli researchers in the field of ALS. The event also included a performance by Danny Sanderson and a moving speech from ALS patient and advocate Debbie Edmoni Zinner.

Debbie utilized unique AI technology to create an avatar that spoke on her behalf. This avatar mimicked Debbie’s movements and facial expressions, allowing her to share her story with the audience in a truly innovative way. This technology, a first of its kind in Israel, provided Debbie with a voice even as ALS robbed her of her ability to speak.
