Barnabas Varga, the Hungary striker, underwent surgery to repair multiple facial fractures sustained during a collision in the 1-0 victory over Scotland at Euro 2024. Following the procedure, Varga was discharged from the hospital in Stuttgart and is now recovering at home in Hungary, according to a statement from the Hungarian Football Federation.
During the match, Varga was involved in a harrowing mid-air collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn while going for a cross. His teammates quickly realized the seriousness of his injury and helped facilitate his removal from the field on a stretcher. Despite the challenging circumstances, Hungary managed to secure a victory with a last-minute goal from Kevin Csoboth.
As the team posed for a photo after the match, Varga’s shirt was held up by his teammates in a show of solidarity and support. Varga’s recovery progress will be closely monitored by the medical team, as Hungary still has a chance of advancing to the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams at the tournament.
