Elon Musk’s biographer, Walter Isaacson, published an excerpt from his upcoming biography in The Washington Post that claimed Musk had thwarted a surprise Ukrainian attack on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. According to the excerpt, Musk contacted Isaacson, expressing concerns about a potential nuclear war and Starlink’s involvement in the attack. Isaacson initially suggested that Musk made the critical decision to cut off satellite access, but later clarified that Musk had simply reaffirmed an existing policy that barred Starlink’s use in attacks on Crimea. Musk responded, stating that at no point did SpaceX promise coverage over Crimea and that a separate satellite system controlled by the US government was being built. However, the concerns about Musk’s influence in geopolitical conflicts remain, with reports indicating that SpaceX threatened to cut off Starlink access unless the US government began paying for services provided to Ukraine. The Pentagon rushed to establish a contract with SpaceX to prevent Musk from discontinuing services abruptly.
