Vietnam and Russia are collaborating on the development of the Nuclear Science and Technology Research Center Project, which includes a new 10 MW research reactor. The goal of this project is to produce radioactive pharmaceuticals and irradiate silicon to create semiconductor materials for chip production. The announcement was made by Dr. Tran Chi Thanh, Director of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute, during a press conference organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
At the end of June, the General Director of Rosatom and the Minister of Science and Technology of Vietnam exchanged a memorandum of understanding on the implementation plan of the project. They agreed on the cooperation and implementation methods to effectively build and operate the Center for Nuclear Science and Technology. The center is expected to be located in Long Khanh City, Dong Nai, and will feature a tank-type nuclear reactor with a capacity of 10 MW.
The new research reactor will focus on producing radioactive pharmaceuticals for cancer treatment and diagnosis, with the aim of significantly increasing production capacity compared to the current capabilities. The Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute is preparing specialized groups in various areas related to the research reactor to ensure its safe and efficient operation.
The project is part of Vietnam’s policy to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and socio-economic development. Several countries around the world are focusing on nuclear energy resources to support their development goals. This project represents Vietnam’s first large-capacity nuclear research reactor and is a significant step in the country’s nuclear energy development.
To support the project, the Ministry of Science and Technology has requested assistance from Rosatom in training staff to operate the research reactor. This collaboration aims to enhance Vietnam’s capabilities in nuclear science and technology research and applications.
