Wireless@Virginia Tech is a research center focused on all aspects of wireless technology, with over 30 faculty members working on various projects. One project being led by the center involves mobile distributed MIMO, bringing together experts from Wireless@Virginia Tech, the Innovation Campus, and the National Security Institute. This collaboration aims to impact the future of wireless technology on a large scale.

NextG, the next generation of wireless technology, encompasses more than just improving data rates. It includes advancements in areas like massive connectivity for smart cities and homes, as well as ultra-reliable low latency communication for applications like autonomous driving. With the emergence of 5G and predictions for 6G and beyond, there are increasingly diverse applications being developed in the wireless field.

A major focus in the wireless industry, on a national and international level, is the development of ORAN (Open Radio Access Network). Virginia Tech is recognized for its strength in this area, as ORAN aims to open up access networks that were traditionally closed and proprietary. By opening up these networks, costs can be reduced and innovative strategies can be implemented to improve performance, benefiting both developed and developing regions alike.

Through its involvement in initiatives like ORAN, Virginia Tech seeks to leverage technology to benefit humanity as a whole. By promoting openness and innovation in wireless networks, the university aims to contribute to the mission of improving access to communication technology worldwide.
