Former Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward has been appointed to a new role by the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group. Ward took over as sporting director after Michael Edwards left in the summer of 2022. However, Ward surprised and disappointed the Reds when he departed the club at the end of the 2022-23 season.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp announced in January that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season after nearly nine years in charge. Since then, Edwards has returned to FSG as its chief executive of football. He has now brought back Ward, who will become FSG’s technical director on 1 June. This role, similar to Edwards’, will not be limited to Liverpool as FSG looks to add a second club to its portfolio.
With the restructuring at Liverpool, a new sporting director, Richard Hughes, has been appointed. Hughes will begin his role after leaving his position as Bournemouth’s technical director at the end of the season. These changes come as the Reds prepare for Klopp’s departure and the arrival of Feyenoord manager Arne Slot as his successor.
