Warning Issued by New York Utility Companies Regarding Scam Tactics

Scammers are becoming more aggressive in their tactics, prompting gas and electric companies to issue warnings to their customers. These scammers are posing as utility company representatives and using various tricks to deceive people. For example, they may ask to use someone’s computer, take photos of bills, request payment with a pre-paid debit card, or offer fake discounts. Companies like NYSEG and RG&E emphasize that they will never send someone to a home to perform these actions. Scammers are also utilizing fake phone numbers to call and text individuals, creating a sense of urgency by threatening service disconnection.

It is crucial to remain vigilant and be aware of these tactics. If someone shows up at your door claiming to be from a utility company or calls demanding immediate payment, it’s important to verify their identity. Utility companies will not ask for cash or payment via prepaid debit cards. If you are uncertain about a caller or visitor, contact your utility provider for verification. This advice applies not only to gas and electric services but also to other services like mobile, internet, and cable.

The elderly are often targeted by scammers, especially in the spring when these fraudulent activities tend to increase. It is important to look out for vulnerable individuals and remind them to be cautious when dealing with unknown callers or visitors. Never share personal information over the phone. If you suspect a scam, contact your utility company using the provided numbers: NYSEG (800-572-1111), RG&E (800-743-2110), National Grid (800-642-4272), or Central Hudson (845-452-2700).

If you do fall victim to a scam, don’t feel ashamed. Contact local law enforcement and report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission. Take steps to protect your information and seek help if needed. The Better Business Bureau is a resource for online scams involving purchases. Stay vigilant and educate yourself and others on how to identify and avoid scams.
