Sources familiar with Obama’s comments indicate that he believes Biden’s path to reelection has become more challenging after the debate against Donald Trump. Privately, Obama has a tougher view of Biden’s electoral race than he expresses publicly.
Following the debate, Obama spoke with Biden by phone to offer support and advice. Despite concerns about the Democratic party’s ability to defeat Trump, Obama has publicly defended Biden and actively participated in his campaign. However, he has privately shared deep concerns about Trump’s political strength and the possibility of his re-election.
Last December, during a private lunch at the White House, Obama advised Biden to strengthen his campaign apparatus and appoint a top-level decision-maker. Despite these concerns, Obama has appeared at fundraising events with Biden, including one with George Clooney and Julia Roberts that raised over $30 million. In April, Obama, Biden, and former President Bill Clinton raised over $26 million at an event in New York.
