The history of dance team competition in Minnesota is marked by the dominance of the Wayzata team, with several standout moments that have solidified their legacy. The Trojans had a remarkable run in the mid-2000s, winning four out of five jazz dance titles between 2006 and 2010, and then claiming another victory in 2012. In 2018, Wayzata once again took the top spot in jazz, and in 2019, they made history by sweeping both the jazz and high kick divisions.

Wayzata’s success dates back to the early years of Minnesota high school dance competition, which began in 1975. They secured wins in 1978 and 1980, at a time when there was only one division instead of the current two. After a brief drought, Wayzata returned to the winner’s circle in mid-February of 2024, clinching the jazz title and finishing as runners-up in high kick. This resurgence led to them being named the All-Metro Sports Awards Dance Team of the Year for 2024.

By winning its eighth Class 3A jazz title and 13th championship overall, Wayzata further solidified its reputation as a powerhouse in the competitive dance world. Head coach Alyse Eichorst expressed pride in her team’s hard work, dedication, and performance after the 2024 state championships. The Trojans’ impressive legacy in dance team competition has left an indelible mark on the history of the sport in Minnesota.
