The confrontation at Palazzo Chigi between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban lasted about an hour and a half. At the end of the face-to-face meeting, the Prime Minister, in joint statements to the press, emphasized that they appreciate and share the priorities identified by the Hungarian presidency, including the demographic challenge. Meloni stressed the importance of addressing the declining birth rates across Europe as a precondition for building a strong and prosperous Europe.

Regarding the Hungarian presidency’s focus on competitiveness, Meloni expressed agreement and support for initiatives in this area. The two leaders also discussed migration management, highlighting the importance of defending external borders, fighting illegal immigration, and enhancing cooperation with countries of origin and transit.

The Prime Ministers also touched on the conflict in Ukraine, where differing positions were acknowledged but support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity was reiterated. They discussed the reconstruction efforts in Ukraine and the upcoming Ukraine Recovery Conference in 2025.

Meloni emphasized the excellent bilateral relations between Italy and Hungary, highlighting the economic cooperation and strategic partnership between the two countries. They also discussed Italy’s support for the Hungarian-led multinational NATO battalion and cooperation in the Balkans region.
