Whiteford’s Aly VanBrandt started off the Division 4 state finals with a single in the bottom of the first inning. The Monroe News reported that two standout softball players from the Monroe County Region were set to face off in the upcoming games. Monroe graduate Ellie Sieler was leading Michigan against a Hoosier squad that included Aly VanBrandt from Whiteford. Both players were leading their respective teams in hitting, with VanBrandt boasting a .380 average and Sieler hitting .363. Sieler had an impressive performance in the previous weekend, with back-to-back home runs and strong stats.
The Michigan and Indiana series was scheduled to begin on Friday. In prep baseball news, Bedford’s team suffered an 8-3 loss to Warren DeLaSalle after a five-run third inning by the opposition. Despite out-hitting their opponents, Bedford committed five errors leading to the loss. Several players like Jace Bloomer and Andrew Kuebbeler contributed runs and hits during the game. In youth wrestling, Monroe’s Sullivan Layne, a third grader at Manor Elementary, won a MYWAY state championship over the weekend.
In adult soccer, Travis Campbell led Old Crows to an 8-5 victory over Athletico with five goals on opening night of Winter Session III at LevelUp Training. Rev. Mike Anagbogu scored twice for Athletico in the match.
