West Indies secure victory over Papua New Guinea in T20 World Cup with five-wicket win

Of the two T20 World Cup co-hosts, it is almost certain that any chance of a home nation succeeding at this World Cup will come from the West Indies, with the United States making their debut. While the Caribbean islands are traditionally a force to be reckoned with in world cricket, the West Indies have something to prove as they did not even qualify for last year’s 50-over World Cup in India. Just 48 hours before their World Cup opener in Guyana against 20th-ranked PNG, Windies scored 257 in a victory over Australia in their final warm-up match, making them a team to watch in many people’s eyes.

With two wickets taken within 13 balls, the West Indies set an early tone for what could have been a convincing home victory. However, they allowed their opponent, PNG, back into the game and their final score was not as challenging as they could have hoped for. A few instances of sloppy fielding and some passive bowling gave PNG hope, evidenced at the end of their innings when a no-ball from Joseph gifted three extra runs. Despite losing opener Charles in the second over, the Windies were able to form partnerships that eventually led them to victory.

Despite a less than convincing win over PNG, the West Indies should, in theory, have an easy time against Uganda. However, they will face tougher opponents in New Zealand and Afghanistan and victory is not guaranteed. West Indies captain Rovman Powell expressed that there is an expectation for the nation to perform well in the tournament, but he also admitted that his team was not at their best during their match against PNG. More consistent and stronger performances will be needed for the West Indies to progress into the Super 8s and have a chance at winning the T20 World Cup as a home nation.
