FADU, a Korean chip designing company specializing in flash memory, has partnered with the U.S. company Western Digital to co-develop solid-state drive (SSD) specification technology. This collaboration aims to improve the storage capacity and lifespan of SSD devices.
One specific area of focus for the two companies will be flexible data placement (FDP) for enterprise SSDs. FDP is a specification that allows a host server to have more control over where data is stored within the SSD. This technique helps to reduce write amplification, which is when the amount of data on a device is multiplied by various factors.
Big Tech companies like Meta and Microsoft have been leading the way in FDP technology development, and now FADU and Western Digital are joining forces to advance this technology further. FADU’s CEO, Lee Ji-hyo, stated in a press release that FDP technology will optimize data allocation in SSD storage space, marking a significant advancement in storage technology.
