During a closed-door meeting with Republican representatives in Congress on Thursday, Donald Trump criticized American aid to Ukraine and urged lawmakers to reduce some taxes while supporting tariffs. His goal was to unite the party ahead of the upcoming election on Nov. 5. Trump expressed his commitment to expanding the nonpartisan majority in the House of Representatives and helping re-elect Republicans who voted against him during his impeachment.
In addition, Trump urged House Republicans to avoid pushing for a national abortion ban and encouraged them to set aside internal conflicts that have hindered their effectiveness. He emphasized the importance of Republicans maintaining control of the House of Representatives and potentially taking control of the Senate to pass legislation.
During the meeting, Trump also discussed the recent aid package for Ukraine and supported tariffs on Chinese products as a negotiating tool. He suggested cutting taxes on tip income and emphasized the importance of states being able to enforce their own abortion policies rather than implementing a national ban.
Republicans are hopeful that Trump will defeat Democratic President Joe Biden in the upcoming election and increase their majority in Congress. Trump’s messages to lawmakers aimed to rally support and strengthen the party’s position leading up to the election.
