Passwords are still the default method for logging in despite the advancements in other logging methods such as passkeys. A recent study conducted by cybersecurity company Kaspersky analyzed 193 million passwords and found that 59% of them could be guessed in less than an hour, making them vulnerable to cyber attacks.
These attacks range from brute force methods to more sophisticated techniques, all aimed at stealing passwords to impersonate identities, steal assets, or commit cybercrimes. In 2023 alone, Kaspersky detected over 32 million attempts to target users with password-stealing programs, highlighting the importance of digital hygiene and proper password policies.
The study revealed that only 23% of passwords were considered strong and would take more than a year to compromise. Most passwords (57%) contained dictionary words, making them less secure. Popular passwords such as “password”, “qwerty12345”, and “admin” were among the most detected standard passwords.
To create stronger passwords and avoid being hacked, experts recommend using password managers to generate completely random passwords. These applications can securely store large volumes of data and provide robust protection of user information. By creating more complex and random passwords, users can significantly reduce the risk of being compromised by cyber attackers.
