What is the Ranking of the Jaguars’ 2024 Draft Class by Sports Illustrated?

The 2024 NFL Draft has been over for a week now, and people are starting to review the draft classes of all the teams in the league. The Jacksonville Jaguars’ draft class has been ranked by Sports Illustrated among their AFC peers, coming in at No. 14 out of 16 teams. They rank ahead of only the No. 15 Buffalo Bills and the No. 16 Tennessee Titans. The Houston Texans are ranked No. 10, while the Indianapolis Colts are ranked No. 5.

Some critics have pointed out that the Jaguars’ draft picks were selected ahead of where they were projected to go, which could be a cause for concern. However, the Jaguars made a strategic move by trading back in the draft to accumulate more picks. This allowed them to gain a top-100 pick and a fourth-round selection in 2025. One of their picks, wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., was selected at No. 23, which some have questioned. However, wide receiver was a key need for the Jaguars following Calvin Ridley’s departure, making it a justifiable selection.

Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke defended the selection of Brian Thomas Jr., stating that he was going to be the pick at No. 17 before the trade back. The team felt confident in their decision and believed they were getting a valuable player for their roster. Additionally, critics have mentioned the selections of a kick returner/running back and a kicker in the later rounds of the draft. However, at that point in the draft, the talent pool had significantly decreased, making those selections less questionable.

Overall, while the Jaguars’ draft class may not have received top marks from critics, there is rationale behind their selections. By making strategic moves, addressing key needs, and utilizing their draft picks wisely, the Jaguars are hopeful that their draft class will pay off in the long run.
