Meta is developing a file transfer system for WhatsApp similar to Google’s Quick Share and Apple’s AirDrop, allowing users to send and receive photos and videos from nearby individuals. This feature, called ‘People Nearby,’ is currently in the works and will be included in an upcoming update to the messaging service. Users will be able to locate nearby individuals and share files with them through their mobile devices.
The new feature has been spotted in the Android beta version of WhatsApp (v2.24.9.22) and shared by specialized portal WABetainfo. In addition to locating nearby users, the feature will enable temporary connections for file sharing, including photos, videos, and other documents. Users can activate and deactivate this function from the WhatsApp settings, and file transfers will be secured with end-to-end encryption without revealing phone numbers.
This new functionality is reminiscent of Quick Share by Google and AirDrop by Apple. It aims to enhance the file-sharing experience on WhatsApp by allowing users to easily send and receive files from nearby individuals. The feature is expected to be a valuable addition to the messaging service, providing a seamless and secure way to share media with others in close proximity.
