Wheeling Central Catholic’s Braden McLeese had an outstanding game, scoring three touchdowns and accounting for more than half of the Knights’ offensive yards in their 47-6 victory over Midland Trail. Despite a loss in their previous game, Central came back strong with 498 yards of total offense and a dominant defensive performance. The Knights held Midland Trail to just 108 yards and did not allow a touchdown. The win put the previously undefeated Patriots in a difficult position. Midland Trail faced adversity off the field as well, as they tragically lost a sophomore lineman in a car accident earlier in the week. Despite the challenges, Midland Trail showed resilience and fought hard throughout the game.
The Maroon Knights got off to a strong start with two interceptions by freshman Niko Kusic leading to touchdowns. Quarterback Seth Cover connected with Braden McCreath for a 44-yard scoring pass to give Central a 7-0 lead. The Knights extended their lead with a field goal by Eli Tucker and another touchdown by Isaac Martin. Midland Trail responded with a kickoff return for a touchdown by Jayden Loop, making the score 13-6. However, Central quickly regained control with two more touchdowns before halftime, including a pick-six by Kusic. The Knights took advantage of several turnovers by the Patriots and dominated the first half.
Wheeling Central continued their dominance in the second half, with McCreath scoring another touchdown and Martin adding his second of the night. The running clock was implemented in the fourth quarter as Central held a commanding lead. Coach Mike Young expressed his pride in the team and praised their hard work and dedication to securing the victory. He emphasized the importance of continued effort and improvement throughout the season.
While Midland Trail struggled to contain McCreath, Wheeling Central’s defense was impressive in shutting down their opponent. McCreath finished the game with 137 rushing yards, one touchdown, and 151 receiving yards with two more touchdowns. Martin contributed 46 rushing yards and two scores, while Cover had an impressive passing performance with 269 yards and two touchdowns.
Overall, it was a strong bounce-back game for Wheeling Central Catholic, reaffirming their status as a formidable team. The win was especially meaningful as it coincided with the school’s Hall of Fame induction. The Knights will look to build on this success and continue to improve as the season progresses.
