The organisers of Wimbledon have confirmed that they will not be implementing a booze ban like the one at the French Open this year. The decision comes after the French Open experienced unruly behavior from spectators, leading to the ban on alcohol consumption in the stands.
Incidents at Roland Garros, such as chewing gum being spat at Belgium’s David Goffin and crowd behavior towards Naomi Osaka, prompted the ban in Paris. However, there are no plans for new restrictions at Wimbledon this summer. The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) stated that there will be no changes to the alcohol policy for the event.
Spectators at Wimbledon are allowed to bring in one bottle of wine or champagne, or two cans of beer each. Additionally, alcohol beverages are available for purchase at the event, with prices ranging from £7.55 for a pint of beer to £32.60 for a jug of Pimm’s.
In previous years, incidents involving drunk fans have occurred at Wimbledon, such as Nick Kyrgios accusing a spectator of being intoxicated during his match against Novak Djokovic. The fan, Anna Palus, was temporarily removed from her seat and later sued Kyrgios for defamation. Kyrgios settled the case, donating £20,000 to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity.
