The winners of the 2024 Health Heroes Awards were recognized by the Deschutes County Public Health Advisory Board at Pioneer Park in Bend. These awards are given to individuals and organizations who have shown excellence in promoting and protecting public and behavioral health in Deschutes County.

One of this year’s winners is Garra Schluter, Supervisor of Nutrition Services for Bend-La Pine Schools. Garra was nominated for the Individual Award by Adrea Albin, who praised Garra and her team for their dedication to providing healthy meals to enhance children’s future and ability to learn. She highlighted their focus on food safety, addressing food insecurity, and sourcing local food.

The Organization Award winner is The Lighthouse Navigation Center, nominated by Colleen Sinksy. The Lighthouse was recognized for their outstanding dedication to promoting health and well-being within Deschutes County. As a low-barrier emergency shelter and day space, they provide essential services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness, including health referrals, permanent housing assistance, public benefits access, and a welcoming community.

The Health Heroes Awards are presented annually by the PHAB in conjunction with National Public Health Week in April and Mental Health Month in May. These awards celebrate individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to public and behavioral health in Deschutes County.
