Members of the United Steelworkers union (USW) in Sudbury, Ontario, working at the SNOLAB research laboratory have voted unanimously to reject a substandard contract offer from their employer. This decision highlights the failure of SNOLAB to negotiate a fair collective agreement that takes into account the cost of living for its employees.
The workers, who are part of USW Local 2020-59, play a crucial role in conducting world-class testing, research, and experiments at SNOLAB facilities, including an underground laboratory deep inside Vale’s Creighton Mine in Greater Sudbury. This work has garnered global recognition, including a Nobel prize.
Despite its reputation as a “world-class science facility,” SNOLAB’s actions at the bargaining table demonstrate a lack of concern for retaining world-class employees. USW staff representative Tracy Nguyen involved in the negotiations has expressed disappointment in SNOLAB’s offer of wages below current standards and demands for concessions from workers.
In October 2023, SNOLAB received $2 million in public funding, in addition to an initial $12 million in funding from the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities. This funding was intended to support the facility’s growth, create jobs, and attract skilled professionals to the region. However, the current contract negotiations have reached a critical point where the employer must choose to return to the bargaining table and provide a fair compensation package that alleviates the financial burden on workers.
The USW is urging SNOLAB to reconsider its position and engage in meaningful negotiations to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. For media inquiries, contact Tracy Nguyen, USW Staff Representative, Pascal Boucher, USW Area Co-ordinator, or Lorei Leigh De Los Reyes, USW Communications.
