Narendra Modi is scheduled to be sworn in as Prime Minister for the third consecutive time on Saturday. This comes after his allies selected him as their leader during a crucial meeting in Delhi. The event will be attended by leaders from South Asian countries as part of the government’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.
Both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have confirmed their participation at the ceremony. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office announced that he has accepted the invitation and extended his congratulations to PM Modi. Similarly, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, is also expected to attend the event after being among the first foreign leaders to congratulate PM Modi.
The Prime Ministers of Nepal, Bhutan, and Mauritius have also received formal invitations to the ceremony. Reports suggest that these leaders will be present in New Delhi to witness PM Modi being sworn in for his third term. The BJP, leading the NDA coalition, secured a comfortable majority in the recent elections.
The NDA partners met in Delhi to unanimously select PM Modi as their leader, despite the BJP falling short of the majority mark. In 2014, SAARC leaders attended PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, while in 2019, BIMSTEC leaders will be present at the oath ceremony. This participation highlights the strong diplomatic ties between India and its neighboring countries.
