World War II veterans recognized ahead of 80th anniversary of D-Day

Ahead of the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday, a luncheon was held in Lynchburg to honor the Greatest Generation. World War II veterans shared their stories with 10 News during the event. One of the veterans interviewed was 95-year-old Dan Villarial from Bedford, who served in the Marines during the war. He reflected on the significance of D-Day and expressed disbelief that 80 years had passed since the historic event. Villarial recalled hearing about the Normandy landing while he was serving in the Marine Corps and how it impacted him personally.

Another veteran, 100-year-old Robert Emile Bouley, also served in the Marines during World War II. He shared his experiences of surviving the war and emphasized the importance of honoring veterans like himself. As time goes on, it becomes increasingly important to preserve the stories of these veterans and ensure that future generations remember their sacrifices.

President & CEO of the National D-Day Memorial, April Cheek-Messier, highlighted the responsibility of citizens to pass on the stories of veterans once they are no longer with us. The upcoming D-Day Commemoration Ceremony at the National D-Day Memorial will honor these veterans and their contributions. The ceremony will take place on Thursday at 11 a.m. and can be watched live on wsls.com. It is crucial to continue honoring and remembering the brave men and women who served during World War II, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
