The first phase of Datang Group’s 100 MW/200 MWh sodium-ion energy storage project in Qianjiang, Hubei Province, was successfully connected to the grid on July 2, 2024. This milestone marked a significant achievement for China’s state-owned power generation enterprise, making it the world’s largest operating sodium-ion battery energy storage system. The project is part of the Datang Hubei Sodium Ion New Energy Storage Power Station and consists of 42 battery energy storage containers and 21 sets of boost converters. It utilizes large-capacity sodium-ion batteries supplied by China’s HiNa Battery Technology and is equipped with a 110 kV transformer station.

Previously, the largest operational sodium-ion system was China Southern Power Grid’s Fulin 10 MWh BESS project in Nanning, southwestern China. This project, which is part of a larger 100 MWh project, also uses HiNa Battery’s cells. Datang Group, one of China’s largest power generation companies, mentioned that the project team faced and overcame numerous challenges to make the Qianjiang project a reality.
