This week, crew members aboard the Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, were called to tackle a small fire while the ship was berthed in a port in Mexico. According to Royal Caribbean, the fire was quickly extinguished and there were no injuries, with minimal impact on board.

The incident took place in Costa Maya, Mexico, where the massive ship lost power briefly but backup power was activated. Crew members were able to control the blaze, with on-board announcements keeping passengers informed of the situation. Passengers on social media noted minor disruptions to their day, but the ship quickly returned to normal operations.

The Icon of the Seas, worth $2 billion, made headlines earlier this year for its luxurious amenities, including seven swimming pools and a 17,000-square-foot water park. Despite the fire, the ship’s itinerary remains unaffected, and it is currently en route to the Mexican island of Cozumel.

Royal Caribbean stated that while minor fires are not common on cruise ships, they are also not uncommon and are usually handled swiftly with minimal disruption to passengers. In March, a fire broke out on a Carnival Cruise Lines ship, highlighting the importance of crew training and swift action in emergency situations on board ships.
