Recently, crew members on board the Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, were required to extinguish a small fire while the ship was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico. The fire was quickly put out and resulted in no injuries, with minimal impact on the overall situation on board.
The Icon of the Seas is nearly 1,200 feet long and 250,800 gross tons, boasting seven swimming pools and a 17,000-square-foot water park. The incident briefly interrupted power on the vessel, but back-up power was activated promptly. Crew members were well-trained to handle the situation, and passengers were kept informed through on-board announcements.
Social media users in an Icon of the Seas Facebook group reported minor disruptions to their day, but operations quickly returned to normal. The ship’s current itinerary to Cozumel, Mexico was not impacted by the fire incident.
Fires on cruise ships are not common, but incidents like these are usually handled swiftly and efficiently by trained crew members. In March, a similar incident occurred on a different cruise ship where a fire broke out. According to a Royal Caribbean spokesperson, these events are usually resolved with minimal disruption to passengers.
